Sight

An annual eye examination is recommended for older people.

Everyone over 60 years of age is eligible for a free eye test. Being unable to leave the home for physical or mental health reasons may also qualify a person for a free eye examination.

Home visits enable people to have their eye examination in their own home. People living with dementia qualify for a free eye examination in their own home as familiarity of their home environment is important. Plus family members being present can feel more comfortable.

Dementia and Sight Loss has been produced by the Royal Institute for the Blind (RNIB).  As well as learning more about sight loss and dementia the leaflet includes a handy checklist on identifying sight loss and other information that can help people make the most of their sight.

These Practice Notes on Falls, Dementia and Sight Loss were compiled by RNIB in consultation with NHS Scotland.  This document outlines information about sight loss and dementia, conditions affecting vision and what can make a difference.

These posters produced by the National Falls Prevention Coordination Group can be displayed in public areas to prompt people about the importance of speaking to an eye care professional if a person has had a the fall.
